Choosing Outfits For Your Newborn Session

Choosing Outfits For Your Newborn Session

When choosing your family’s outfits for your newborn session, I always recommend coordinating colors. To start, you will want to select one or two primary colors, then a secondary color. For instance, soft green, brown, navy blue, and cream go well together. You could have your baby wearing a soft green dress, you could wear a cream dress, and dad can be in jeans and a brown button-down. The goal is to mix up those outfits! We don’t want anyone to be in the same outfit as someone else. Don’t think “What matches?” Instead, I want you to think, “Do these colors go well together?”

Choosing Outfits For Your Newborn Session

For this newborn session, the primary colors were cream and brown, with pink and navy as secondary colors. So beautiful! It is best to keep it simple and avoid choosing too many colors, as this can overwhelm the images. I love neutral and earthy tones that keep the focus on you, the subject! Bright neon colors can sometimes create a color cast, so we want to avoid that.

Printing Your Photos

Are you planning on printing your photos? Take a minute to look around your house. What colors do you have around your house? What colors go well with them? Are your walls brown? Then you should avoid black in your outfits. Do you have grey and green decor? Cream, grey, and brown are good coordinating colors. Is your decor red? Don’t wear purple outfits. When I have all my outfits ready, I like to bring them to the living room, take a step back, and see how it looks in the room.

Baby’s outfit

It can be helpful to start with your baby’s outfit. Baby might have a cute navy blue dress or a white shirt and black pants in their closet. After you have a starting point, you can continue to add outfits while coordinating the colors. For example, cream, brown, pink, or soft green pair nicely with navy blue. Soft blue or grey goes nicely with black and white. Don’t be afraid to dress baby up! Add a cute headband, bowtie, or sweater to the baby’s outfit to create depth and visual interest.

One thing I do ask is that you avoid anything with words on it. Keeping your outfits free of words can enhance their timeless quality. Clothes with a pattern or print can add visual interest to your images. Be careful, though, as too many prints can make your images busy and distracting. Sometimes, simple is better.

If you need a second pair of eyes or just aren’t sure about your outfits, send me a picture. I would love to help you pick out the best colors for your family.
